Install Cake Wallet on Android

On Android, install Cake Wallet from Google Play (package com.cakewallet.cake_wallet), from Accrescent, from Cake's own F-Droid repository at fdroid.cakelabs.com, or as an APK from the official GitHub releases, optionally managed by Obtainium. You need Android 8.0 or later. For GitHub APKs, check the SHA-256 hash before installing.

Quick steps

  1. Check your Android version. Cake Wallet needs Android 8.0 or later. Have paper and a pen ready for the seed.
  2. Choose a source. Google Play for most users; Accrescent or Cake's F-Droid repository at fdroid.cakelabs.com without Google; or the GitHub APK, optionally through Obtainium.
  3. Confirm it is the real app. In Google Play or Accrescent, check the package name com.cakewallet.cake_wallet. On GitHub, use the cake-tech/cake_wallet releases page and pick a file starting with Cake_Wallet.
  4. Verify a GitHub APK. Pick the arm64-v8a file for most phones, compute its SHA-256 hash and compare it with the hash in the release notes. Do not install if it differs.
  5. Install and allow updates. Install the app. Store, Accrescent and F-Droid installs update for you; for GitHub APKs use Obtainium or check for new releases yourself.
  6. Create or restore a wallet. Open Cake Wallet, set a PIN, create or restore a wallet and write the seed on paper. For a 25-word Monero seed, also write down the restore height.

Cake Wallet offers more ways to install on Android than on any other platform. All of them deliver the same app; they differ in how updates arrive and how much you rely on Google. This guide covers each one as of October 2026.

Requirements

  • Android 8.0 (SDK 26) or later. Cake recommends a newer device for better security and performance (Cake Wallet docs, 2026).
  • Enough storage for the app and wallet data. Litecoin MWEB's first sync downloads several hundred megabytes.
  • Paper and pen for the seed backup.

Google Play

Open the Play Store, search for Cake Wallet, and before installing open the listing in a browser or share it: the address must end in id=com.cakewallet.cake_wallet. Cake's docs warn that fake wallet apps copy names and icons (Cake Wallet docs, 2026). Tap Install. Play updates the app automatically.

Accrescent

Accrescent is a security- and privacy-focused Android app store. On GrapheneOS it can be installed from the built-in App Store; on other phones, from accrescent.app or Accrescent's own GitHub releases. Then search for Cake Wallet in Accrescent and install it. Cake's docs recommend Accrescent for reliable updates.

Cake's F-Droid repository

Cake Wallet is not in the main F-Droid catalogue. Cake runs its own repository, which also carries Cupcake.

  1. Install the F-Droid app if you do not have it.
  2. On your phone, open fdroid.cakelabs.com (type it yourself). It shows the repository details.
  3. Add the repository to F-Droid using the link or details on that page, through F-Droid's repository settings.
  4. Refresh F-Droid, search for Cake Wallet and install it.

GitHub APK with SHA-256 check

Download APKs only from the releases page of github.com/cake-tech/cake_wallet, reached from cakewallet.com. Each release lists several Android files:

File endingFor
-arm64-v8a.apkAlmost all phones from recent years (64-bit ARM)
-armeabi-v7a.apkOlder 32-bit ARM phones
-x86_64.apkx86 devices such as emulators and some Chromebooks
No processor labelA larger file for any device

Files starting with Monero.com_ are Cake's separate Monero-only app. Pick a Cake_Wallet_ file.

Check the hash. The release notes list a SHA-256 hash for every file. The easiest way is to download the APK on a computer and run sha256sum (Linux), shasum -a 256 (macOS) or certutil -hashfile FILENAME SHA256 (Windows), then compare. If they do not match exactly, delete the file and do not install it. Newer releases may also include a signed SHA256SUMS file; see the download guide.

Check the signer (optional). Cake's verification guide gives the APK signing certificate digest as c54053ab0f10d9541762a3da7665ae3dba5e7c743ab4f108a5349d62ac106ef5. The on-device app AppVerifier, or apksigner on a computer, can confirm it.

To install, open the APK on your phone and allow your browser or file manager to install unknown apps when Android asks. You can switch that permission off again afterwards. GitHub installs do not update by themselves.

Obtainium

Obtainium installs apps straight from their source and checks for updates. Cake's docs describe these steps (Cake Wallet docs, 2026):

  1. Install Obtainium from F-Droid, its official site or its GitHub page.
  2. In Obtainium, tap Add App and paste https://github.com/cake-tech/cake_wallet/ as the App Source URL, then tap Add.
  3. Choose Cake Wallet (not Monero.com) and continue.
  4. Tap Install and pick a version if asked.

Obtainium can also add Cake's F-Droid repository instead of GitHub.

Switching between sources

Android only updates an app in place if the new copy is signed with the same key. If Android refuses to install over the existing app because of a signature mismatch, you must uninstall first, and uninstalling deletes your wallets. Cake's docs say switching to Accrescent requires backing up all seeds and wallets, uninstalling, and reinstalling.

  1. Write down the seed of every wallet, plus the restore height for 25-word Monero seeds. Optionally, also create an encrypted backup file and store it off the phone with its backup password.
  2. Uninstall Cake Wallet.
  3. Install from the new source and restore each wallet. See restore a wallet.

Hardening tips for Android

Cake publishes a hardening guide for people who keep larger amounts on a phone (Cake Wallet docs, 2026). Its main suggestions:

  • Use a phone that still receives security updates, ideally one used only for your wallet.
  • If you use a custom operating system such as GrapheneOS or CalyxOS, choose one that keeps verified boot.
  • Set a strong device password and check that device encryption is on.
  • Pick one update method and stick to it, so you always know where the app comes from.

After installing

  • Create or restore a wallet and back up the seed on paper. See setup.
  • Consider the privacy options: Tor and your own node.
  • Cake Wallet says its support never asks for your seed and never messages you first.
