Litecoin MWEB in Cake Wallet

MWEB (MimbleWimble Extension Blocks) is Litecoin's optional privacy layer, which hides amounts and addresses. In Cake Wallet you switch it on under Litecoin Settings, MWEB, wait for a one-time download of several hundred MB, then receive to a Private ltcmweb1 address. It works on iPhone and Android only.

Quick steps

  1. Open your Litecoin wallet. Use the iPhone or Android app; MWEB is not available on desktop.
  2. Enable MWEB. Tap the MWEB banner or go to Settings, Litecoin Settings, MWEB and turn on Enable MWEB.
  3. Let the first sync finish. Stay on Wi-Fi and keep the app open until Blocks Remaining reaches zero. The one-time download is several hundred MB.
  4. Get a Private address. Tap Receive, tap the address type under the QR code and switch from Standard to Private.
  5. Peg in your own LTC. Send from your standard balance to your ltcmweb1 address and wait for six confirmations.
  6. Peg out when needed. Send from the MWEB balance to a standard ltc1 address and wait six confirmations.

Cake Wallet added MWEB in version 4.20.0 in October 2024 and calls itself the first cross-platform wallet to offer it (Cake Wallet blog, 2024). Litecoin itself has been in the app since version 4.2.0 in May 2021.

What MWEB is

MWEB runs alongside normal Litecoin. Coins moved into it get confidential amounts and addresses that outsiders cannot read on-chain. In Cake Wallet, MWEB appears as a second, Private side of your Litecoin wallet: the Assets tab lists Litecoin and Litecoin Private balances separately. An MWEB address starts with ltcmweb1 and can be reused, even posted publicly, without exposing your payments (Cake Wallet docs, 2026).

Turning MWEB on

Tap the MWEB banner on the Litecoin home screen, or go to Settings, Litecoin Settings, MWEB, and turn on Enable MWEB. The same screen has MWEB Scanning, MWEB Logs and MWEB Node. The first sync is large: the app warns that it downloads about 600 MB and may take up to 30 minutes depending on your connection; the docs say "hundreds of MB" and recommend Wi-Fi. The download happens once per device and serves all your Litecoin wallets. A Blocks Remaining counter shows progress.

A restored Litecoin wallet starts with MWEB off. If funds seem missing after a restore, let the wallet finish syncing, then enable MWEB (see balance missing).

If you turn MWEB off later, your MWEB address keeps working, but you must re-enable scanning to see funds sent to it in the meantime.

Limits

  • Mobile only. MWEB works in the iPhone and Android apps. Desktop wallets get no Private address and cannot peg in or out.
  • No hardware wallets. Since 6.4.2 (August 2026), hardware wallets no longer show the MWEB toggle.
  • Exchanges. Many exchanges cannot send to ltcmweb1 addresses. Use a standard ltc1 address for those and peg in yourself.
  • Peg visibility. Pegging in and out is visible on the public chain; only what happens inside MWEB is confidential.
  • Fees. Litecoin has Slow, Medium (default) and Fast fees and no custom fee or Bump fee option.

Cake Wallet's Cupcake app can sign Litecoin and MWEB transactions offline (see Cupcake), and Cake Pay accepts LTC including MWEB (see Cake Pay).

Who MWEB is for

MWEB makes sense if you already use Litecoin for payments and want balances and amounts kept out of public view, for example when you receive repeat payments at one published address. It is less useful if you mostly move LTC to and from exchanges, because many of them only handle standard addresses and every peg in or out is visible. Because the first sync is heavy, set it up on Wi-Fi rather than just before you need to pay.

MWEB, Monero and Bitcoin privacy tools

FeatureWhat it hidesWho has to support it
Litecoin MWEBAmounts and addresses inside MWEBSender and receiver for MWEB-to-MWEB; anyone can pay an ltcmweb1 address from a wallet that supports it
MoneroSender, receiver and amount for every payment, by defaultBuilt into the coin

MWEB is optional and opt-in, so the private set is smaller than Monero's, where every transaction is private. It is a good fit if you already hold Litecoin and want confidential balances without changing coin. See Monero in Cake Wallet and Silent Payments.

Common MWEB problems

  • Blocks Remaining is not moving. The first sync is large. Stay on Wi-Fi, keep the app open, and check that MWEB Scanning is on. Switching the Litecoin node can help.
  • Private balance is zero after a restore. MWEB starts off on restored wallets. Turn on Enable MWEB and wait for the sync.
  • Pegged-in coins are not showing. Peg-ins need six confirmations, roughly 15 minutes on Litecoin, before they appear on the Private side.
  • Send fails with a commit error. Close the app fully, reopen it, let it finish syncing and try again. More in error messages.

If you need help, Cake Wallet support can ask for MWEB Logs, which you can export from the MWEB settings. Never share your seed.

Litecoin seeds

New Litecoin wallets use a 12-word BIP39 seed by default (24 words optional), with path m/84'/2'/0'. An Electrum seed (path m/0') is available under Advanced Settings. Cake Wallet tracks ltc1 and ltcmweb1 addresses only, so funds on older address types will not show (Cake Wallet docs, 2026).

Rules on privacy features differ by country, and some exchanges treat MWEB withdrawals differently. Check what applies to you; this guide does not give legal advice. Back up your seed, and remember Cake Wallet never asks for it or messages you first.

Frequently asked questions

Is MWEB free to use?

There is no Cake Wallet fee. You pay normal Litecoin network fees.

Why does MWEB take so long the first time?

It downloads about 600 MB of MWEB data once per device. Later syncs are much faster.

Can I use MWEB on the Mac or Linux app?

No. MWEB works only on iOS and Android.

Why can't my exchange send to my ltcmweb1 address?

Many exchanges do not support MWEB addresses. Use a standard ltc1 address and peg in yourself.

My MWEB balance disappeared after a restore. What now?

Restored wallets start with MWEB off. Let the wallet sync, then enable MWEB in Litecoin Settings.
